Summary / Abstract :
|
The Mapping The Killing Fields of Cambodia, 1997 report by the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) explores several sites associated with the Khmer Rouge atrocities:
Wat Kok Thlork (Siem Reap): A burial site with an estimated 35,000 to 36,000 victims. It is challenging to access, requiring a moto taxi. Wat Kinin (near Wat Kok Thlork): A prison used by the Khmer Rouge, accessible only via witness testimony, as the site is difficult to reach by car. Prey Prasat: A burial site with 90-100 victims, accessed via witness Chea Hann's testimony. Kralanh Security: A prison site located 20 km north of Kralanh District Office, with testimony from Sek Bun Thoeun. La Pikhead Phnom Trong Bat: A burial site at the foot of Truong Bat Mountain, with an estimated 35,000 to 36,000 victims, as documented by Sek Bun Thoeun. The DC-Cam research team, led by Sin Khin, visited Siem Reap province on December 15, 1998, and met with local authorities to inform them of their mission. Despite not meeting the Governor, they received cooperation from district officials. The team visited sites such as Wat Athikaram, a former security office and execution site in Trapeang Seh, Siem Reap, and Kra Lanh District, which had execution sites like Trung Bat Mountain, a former security office, and the residence of the district chief during the Khmer Rouge era. However, they encountered difficulties accessing certain sites due to poor road conditions and continued Khmer Rouge defector activity. In Kra Lanh District, the team learned from testimonies, including from Sek Bun Thoeun, about the mass killings under different district chiefs: Ta Chiem (1970-1977) with minimal killings, Ta Chen (1977-1978) with brutal killings, and Ta Rin (1978-1979) continuing the executions. Witnesses described the horrific torture and executions at Trung Bat Mountain, where an estimated 400-500 people were killed, contributing to the district's overall toll of 35,000-36,000 deaths. On December 17, 1998, the team visited Chikreng District to gather more information, learning about various execution sites like Wat Kok Thlork Leu and Wat Kinin, as well as other locations where hundreds of people were killed during the Khmer Rouge regime. The team, however, faced time constraints and difficulty accessing some sites due to poor roads and long distances. The team also visited Angkor Thom District, where they found no execution sites, as the district was primarily focused on protecting temples and antiquities. |
