Evacuation
Before the liberation, I served as a Lon Nol soldier, and lived together with my family in Teuk Thla, Phnom Penh city. On the morning of April 17, 1975, other Lon Nol soldiers and I were at the Lon Nol barrack, located near Wat Phnom. When we heard the Khmer Rouge say to “get out of Phnom Penh city, because we are afraid that the U.S might bomb the city,� we dropped our weapons. There were lots of Khmer Rouge soldiers, forcing people to move out. In the beginning, they forced me to walk from Phnom Penh to Takhmao. Then unknown Khmer Rouge soldiers loaded my friends, such as Leng, Chea, myself, and others onto a truck, and took us to Sa-ang. With hopes of searching for my family, finding some food, and a safe place to live, my friends and I escaped and returned to Phnom Penh. Unfortunately, when we were swimming across the Basak river, the Khmer Rouge arrested us. Then they forced me to walk until I reached Rorka Kaong. A month after seeing unknown Khmer Rouge militiamen arrest and kill my neighbors, I escaped from the area. I witnessed the incident, but I am not certain which region it was, because it was at night. I do not know for certain why they killed these people. But I think the Khmer Rouge killed these people, because they were the 17th of April people. Later on, I came to live at this current address. |
