The loss of my mother, Yy San
In late 1978, my mother, Yy San, died from a postpartum illness in Pursat province. I learned of the incident from my father. In 1978, Khmer Rouge cadres deported all villagers to Pursat province, because Yuon [Vietnamese] were coming to kill the people. The Khmer Rouge scared people, saying that if we did not run, the Yuons would cut off our necks and heels. I am not exactly certain who ordered the villagers to move out of the village. I only know that they were Khmer Rouge soldiers. At this time, my mother became ill, because El, a village chief, who is still alive and lives in at an unknown address, forced her to work building the Romlech dam. I learned from my father, that my mother was forced to carry dirt from six a.m. to eleven a.m., and after a short break with a ladle of rice soup, she had to work from one p.m. to six p.m., and then got another ladle of rice soup. At night, we worked from seven p.m. to eleven p.m., without receiving any extra food. Then we went to sleep. My mother had a postpartum illness, as a result of being forced to carry dirt. When she had a postpartum illness, Ta An (deceased) gave her some rabbit dropping [useless] medicine. However, the medicine was not effective at all. My father said, that they spent half a month travelling to Pursat province. Because she was exhausted from building the Romlech dam, and had a postpartum illness, she died at Pursat province. The Khmer Rouge leaders should be held accountable for the death of my mother. In 1983, I, along with other villagers, filed a petition against the Khmer Rouge. I am happy to file the application form now. I want to see the Khmer Rouge leaders prosecuted soon. |
