Killing
In late 1975, a village chief named Sun came to arrest my father, Chieb Eat. The chief said that my father was a Lon Nol soldier who used to bring other [Lon Nol] soldiers to attack his forces. This incident took place in Khmakk village, Salavisay commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province. When the chief arrested my father, he just told him to go to work. However, after this incident, my father disappeared forever. During this time, Sun ordered a garrison named York to arrest, mistreat, and starve my father until he became malnourished. My father was subsequently executed. Like my father, my two uncles, Chieb Lao and Chieb Uch, were arrested and killed under Sun’s orders. They were both accused of being Lon Nol traitors. At this point, my father and uncles were taken to be killed in Chom Mas village, Sambour commune, Sambour district, Kampong Thom province. |

Forced labor
In 1976, Ib, a chief of Khmakk village, Salavisay commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province, assigned me to harvest rice fields in the afternoon. At the time, groups of two were assigned to harvest half a hectare of paddy field. If the two people could not finish this task, they were not allowed to stop working and their rations were cut off. At the time, although I had just given birth to my child 3 months ago, the village leaders forced me to work extremely hard. Ib said that I had made many mistakes already and that my dad used to be connected to Lon Nol. He told me that unless I worked hard, I would be killed. During daytime, the village leaders sent me to harvest the paddy fields and thresh rice. During nighttime, in terms of rations, [I] received only one ladle of rice soup per meal. While I was harvesting the paddy field, my sister’s rations were cut off; her child was sick and she could not work. When the village heads rang the mealtime bell, my sister carried her child to receive their rations. However, Ib, the village chief, said that she could not obtain the rations because she had not gone to work. During the subsequent evening meeting, Ib criticized my sister and said that although her child was not gravely ill, she still did not go to work. He also mentioned that she was not focused on her work. He stated that if she continued to not work hard, she would be killed. |
