A month after the Khmer Rouge took over the country on April 17, 1975, a security police named Ut came to arrest my father and brought him to a security centre located in Chramas village, Prasat Sambour district. Ut accused my father of being a Lon Nol soldier. At this point, my younger sibling informed me that our father had disappeared, supposedly taken to be re-educated. Prior to his arrest, my father told my mother to look after the children. My mother expected Khmer Rouge security police to arrest and kill my father. After being informed of my father’s arrest, I traveled to the security centre in Chramas village. Speaking with a guard at the centre, I told him details about my father’s appearance and asked him about my father. He told me that my father had been taken to be killed.

Forced labor

From 1972 to April 17, 1975, I served as a Khmer Rouge soldier. About a month after Pol Pot came to power, a unit chief named Pea dismissed me from the army and made me become a common citizen. After leaving the army, I went to a Khmakk cooperative, [under the supervision of] a woman named Im, who currently lives in Khmakk village. Upon my arrival there, I was sent to plant rice, plough the field, and transplant rice seedlings. During the morning, I worked from four a.m. to eleven a.m. In the afternoon, I worked from one p.m. to five p.m. During the evening, I worked from seven p.m. to eleven p.m. I was forced to work throughout both the dry and rainy seasons.
