Mao Chhang served Khmer communist movement in 1973 as a combatant in group 3, battalion B-2, platoon C-2 in Kampong Ro district, Svay Rieng province, region 23. He defected to national military authority in battalion 607, which was located at WT:928-185 in Svay Rieng province, and brough along a hand gun. After returning to the society, he proposed to serve in Khmer republic government, pledging that he would not return to Khmer communist, nor Viet Cong.
ម៉ៅ ឆាង បានចូលបម្រើក្នុងចលនាខ្មែរកុម្មុយនីស្ដនៅថ្ងៃទី២៨ ខែតុលាឆ្នាំ១៩៧៣ ក្នុងក្រុមទី៣, កងអនុសេនាតូចខ-៣, កងអនុសេនាធំគ-២ក្នុងស្រុកកំពង់រោទិ៍ ខេត្ដស្វាយរៀងតំបន់២៣។ ជននេះបានចូលរួបរួម ក្នុងសង្គមវិញជាមួយនឹងកងទ័ពជាតិយើង ក្នុងកងវរសេនាតូចលេខ៦០៧ត្រង់ដុបឡាវ៉េតេៈ៩២៨-១៨៥ក្នុងខេត្ដស្វាយរៀង ដោយនាំយកមកជាមួយនូវអាវុធ១ដើមមកផង។ ក្រោមពីចូលរួបរួមក្នុងសង្គមជាតិវិញ, ជននេះបានសុំបម្រើរដ្ឋាភិបាលសាធារណៈរដ្ឋខ្មែរដោយសន្យាថាៈ មិនវិលត្រឡប់ទៅបម្រើអោយខ្មែរកុម្មុយនីស្ដ និងយួនយៀកកុងវិញឡើយ។
