Forced labor
Between 1976 and 1977, after the Pol Pot-led Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975, I endured extreme difficulties after my husband was forcibly enlisted as a soldier. Even though I was three months pregnant, commune leaders still forced me to perform heavy tasks such as carrying Deidambok, a kind of land, and cutting Angtreangkhet trees to make fertilizer. Seven months after I gave birth, Choun, a male Preah Damrei commune chief who came from the east zone, summoned me to work in a female mobile work brigade. While in this brigade, I transplanted rice seedlings in Preah Damrei commune. According to the commune plan, we were supposed to transplant four Plaun [two hundred rice seedlings] of rice seedlings per day, working from four a.m. to five or six p.m. If we could not complete this task on time, they forced us to continue working in the paddy field. Later on, Ta Choun, a commune chief, transferred me to work on the 30 September dam. We had to carry two cubic meters of soil per day; they otherwise took us away, though I do not know where people were taken. There was much pain and suffering throughout both day and night. They ordered us to protect and guard the dam at night. During daytime, we carried soil from the pool to the top of the dam. It took three months to finish constructing the 30 September dam. After work on the 30 September dam was completed in late 1978, Angkar replaced Ta Choun, a commune chief, with a new commune chief named Soeng, who came from the southwest zone. After five months as a commune chief, Soeng was pulled out in 1978 and replaced by Uch, who also came from the southwest zone. The 30 September dam was located in Kantol Thmei village, Duong commune, Prasat Balangkdistrict, Kampong Thom province. I have no idea why the 30 September dam was constructed. I am not really sure about other things that occurred under the regime. |
