Killing
In 1976, while working at Banchaechy dam, I saw people taken out of the group almost every day. At the time, Chet told these people that Angkar requested to meet with them; they then disappeared forever. Five members of my group, Mith, Saom, Hong, Vann, and Den, were called as well and disappeared forever. Thaong, a commune chief, held a meeting and mentioned that Yuon, CIA, and KGB agents as well as those involved in traitorous networks had be to killed. Chet told those who did not work fast that they wanted to go with the traitors. |

Forced labor
In 1976, a base chief named Thleng told me, “Comrade! Work in the mobile work brigade, pulling out grass in the field. I did not know why I had been ordered to do the assigned task. I just did as they told me to do. I went to do dry farming in Kampong Ko village, unknown commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province for about half a month. I was then transferred to build the Bachhae Chy dam, located in an unknown village and commune, Kampong Svay district. At this time, a unit chief named Yam came to tell me that I had been transferred from dry farming to working in a mobile work brigade because there were not enough people doing the dry farming. A big unit chief named Chet led the brigade and assigned amounts of soil (in square meters) for people to carry. At the time, Chet ordered me to carry three cubic meters of soil and gave me rice soup and morning glory soup to eat. At this point, even though I received only a small amount of rations to eat, I was forced to work until my assigned tasks were accomplished. Our rations were cut off if we could not finish the assigned tasks. Though I became ill from overwork and malnutrition, they still forced me to work. We were each supposed to carry three square meters of soil. Since I carried only one and a half square meters of soil, Phin, a commune chief, cut off my rations and gave me nothing to eat. He said that he did not give any rations to [those who] could not finish the assigned tasks. At this time, I begged him, but he threatened me and said that I wanted to confront him. I fell ill for three days and starved for three days as well. However, I was never able to stay home and relax. They forced me to work and gave me no rations because I could not finish the assigned tasks. In early 1977, Chet, a big unit chief, transferred me to build a dam at construction site number 1, located in Preah Damrei village, Preah Damrei commune, Stung district, Kampong Thom province. He said that work on this place was completed and [we needed to take people] to help work at another place. With no idea where to go, I just obeyed their orders. Upon our arrival at construction site number one, our group, led by Pai, a big unit chief, was first ordered to dig the ground in order to create the foundation for the structure (eleven cubic meters in depth?) I worked from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and, after eating a plate of rice, continued working from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Building the foundation structure at construction site number one was more difficult than building Bachhaechy dam because I had to dig deep inside the ground. Later on, Pai ordered my group, which was comprised of twelve members, to arrange bricks, but the bricks broke. At this time, Pai pulled our group out because he said that we could not work and that Angkar could cause problems regarding this matter. After this, Pai ordered another mobile work brigade, comprised of twelve members from Stung, to complete these tasks. However, six of them died in a landslide there. |
