The death of my brother
In 1976, five village guards, people I did not know, arrested Yan Chhorn, my older brother (in his 40s). The arrest took place in Monkul Sla village, Damrei Slap at six p.m. At three a.m., after being informed by my parents and fellow village workers about the incident, I went to Ta Phos village, Samaky commune, Prasat Balangkdistrict. From six p.m. to three a.m., in an attempt to find out how the guards were treating my brother, I walked from Monkulsla village to Taphos village. Upon my arrival, I saw guards in a forest blindfold my brother with a scarf and beat him all over his body with a stick. After witnessing this incident, I went back because I was afraid that the guards would kill our family. When my brother, Yan Chhorn, was arrested, another brother, Yan Hun, was also arrested but later released because the guards said that he had only committed a minor offense. His minor offense was a moral offense: speaking with girls. My brother Chhorn, however, was not released because he had committed a serious offense; he was accused of being a Lon Nol soldier. In 1974, Lon Nol soldiers evacuated people who lived in my village and commune to Kampong Thom provincial capital town. Chhorn enlisted as a Lon Nol soldier and, when he returned, was arrested and killed by the Khmer Rouge guards. I did not see who killed my brother nor was I aware of where he was killed, though I heard that the killing took place in Tachol village. I do not know who was responsible for the killing. |

Overwork and starvation
Between 1975 and 1979, an economic chief named Chhim Chies forced me to make human fertilizer and work in a mobile work unit carrying soil in Ponnhachy. At one point, I challenged him about the assigned task, saying that I could not carry soil because I was three months pregnant. Ta Chies did not believe me, said that I was malingering and told me he wanted to tie me up with a hammock string. I then went back to carrying soil because I was afraid of being killed. Later on, I went to carry earth at Ponnheachy and collapsed unconscious on the gasoline container. At this time, a construction site chief named Seam sent a midwife to treat me. They then found out I was actually pregnant and allowed me to be hospitalized in Kampong Thom hospital. After this incident, I was permitted to stay at home and do housework. Between 1976 and 1977, because a 70 year old woman named Yey Thabb Uy could not perform heavy tasks (except weaving mats), a cooperative chief named Ta Chies cut her rations off until she died in her home, leaving her granddaughter who had just learned to walk. |
