In late 1975, Toeun, a cooperative chief, requested to meet with my husband, Yan Yuon, and killed him because he used to serve as a Lon Nol soldier. During the evacuation, we lived in Traey village, Khann Nhaem commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province. When they were making population statistics, my husband told them that he had served as a Lon Nol soldier during the Lon Nol regime because the Khmer Rouge said that anyone who used to serve (the former government) would be sent to work in a similar position.
When Koeun came to arrest my husband, I asked him, “Where will you take my husband?� Koeun said that my husband would be taken to receive an education and that he would return after one week; it was a rotating system. I did not see my husband again. Lon, a base person, secretly told me that my husband had been killed at O Kranhoung, Khann Nhaeng commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province. In 1976, Chet, a mobile work brigade chief, ordered me to carry soil and build a second construction dam, located in Kandol village, Preah Damrei commune, Stung district, Kampong Thom province. Chet held a meeting and told everyone to carry the earth. At that time, I did not know the reason (why he ordered us to do so). While carrying soil, I worked from six a.m. to twelve p.m. and one p.m. to five p.m. During the break, each person received one small tin pot of gruel. During this period, Chet measured the amounts of earth that we each carried. Those who could not finish carrying the set amount were forced to complete this task; otherwise, they would have nothing to eat. They received nothing to eat because they could not work (to the Khmer Rouge’s satisfaction). |
