At least 60,000 Cambodians crowded into the instant slum at Thai border for one reason: food. They were the homeless survivors of a year of famine that reduced their prosperous and serene homeland to an international synonym for disaster and humanitarian concern.
យ៉ាងហោចណាស់ក៏មានប្រជាជនកម្ពុជាជាង ៦០ ០០០ បានរស់នៅ ប្រមូលផ្ដុំគ្នានៅក្នុងតំបន់អាណាធិបតេយ្យតាមខ្សែបណ្ដោយព្រំដែនថៃ ហើយកត្ដាតែមួយគាត់ដែលធ្វើឱ្យគេរស់នៅបែបនោះគឺដោយសារតែកត្ដា ស្បៀងអាហារ។ ប្រជាជនទាំងអស់នោះភាគច្រើនជា ជនរស់រានមាន ជីវិតដែលគ្មានទីជម្រក ហើយជាជនទុរភិក្សដែលស្ថិតនៅក្នុងអំឡុងឆ្នាំដែល មានគ្រោះទុរភិក្សហើយភាពរុងរឿងនិងភាពស្ងប់សុខដែលប្រទេសកម្ពុជា ធ្លាប់មានក៏ប្រែក្លាយមក មានន័យថា ជាគ្រោះមហន្ដរាយ និងកង្វល់អំពីមនុស្សធម៌នៅលើឆាកអន្ដរជាតិ។
