In 1975, after Khmer Rouge soldiers defeated Lon Nol and took power, Sim, a Khmer Rouge cadre, assigned me to work in a mobile work brigade, though I do not remember the name of my unit chief. Later on, Sim, a village chief, assigned me to pull out rice seedlings in Prateat village. Each person was supposed to pull out five phloun of rice seedlings per day. If they did not do so, they would not be allowed to take a rest. In addition, they ordered me to transplant rice seedlings: 10 acres per day. If I could not do so, I would not be allowed to take a rest and my rations would be cut off. Until the harvesting season, I was assigned to harvest rice, but not assigned a precise amount of work to complete. In addition, they sent me to build the dam at Santuk, assigning me to carry two cubic meters of soil and walk long distances. Sometimes, unable to carry the earth, I was called to attend a criticism meeting. If I still could not finish the work the next day, my rations would be reduced. After returning from Santuk, they sent me to Srasov to do rice farming. This place was under the supervision of a unit chief named Chhai, currently living in Kbil. After this task, Chhai transferred me to build 30 September dam. |
