The invasion, which began on December 25, 1978, came just seven weeks after Vietnam had signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation with the Soviet Union, and six months after Vietnam had joined the Soviet dominated economic group COMECON.
សង្គ្រាមលុកលុយដែលចាប់ដំណើរការតាំងពីខែធ្នូទី២៥ ឆ្នាំ១៩៨៨ បើគិតទៅមានរយៈពេលជាង៧សប្ដាហ៍មកហើយ ក្រោយពីពេលដែល វៀតណាមបានចុះហត្ថលេខាទៅលើសន្ធិសញ្ញានៃចំណងមិត្ដភាព និងកិច្ចសហប្រតិបតិ្ដការជាមួយនឹងសហភាពសូវៀតហើយ រយៈពេល៦ខែ ក្រោយមកទៀតវៀតណាមបានចូលរួមជាមួយនឹងសូវៀតដើម្បីគ្របដណ្ដប់ ទៅលើក្រុមសេដ្ឋកិច្ចកូមេកុន។
