Starved to death
Between 1975 and 1977, rations were so bad. There was lots of work to do, but they served one can of rice for eight people. When we fell sick because of malnutrition, they said we were malingering. Later on, groups of ten were given one can of rice to eat until people became absolutely exhausted, fell sick, and died. Those who died from malnutrition are Yey Nim, aunt, Keo Liv, uncle Ret Dum, cousin Ret Roeu, cousin Yang Sep, aunt During this period, leaders in Tbel village, Sun and Prich, starved people. I did not have any idea what their plan was. |

Forced marriage
In 1978, Angkar arranged a marriage for Chhin Teng and I. At this time, a district chief whose name I forget arranged marriages for thirty-three couples, none of whom knew each other before. The ceremony was held in Wat Andet pagoda. During the wedding, Angkar ordered me to take a woman named Chhun Teng as my wife forever. I have no idea why they assigned thirty-three couples to get married at the same time. Family separation In 1976, Prinh, a chief of commune youth, put me to work in the district mobile work brigade. They then ordered me to build the 5 January dam, located in Santuk district of Kampong Thom province, assigning each person to carry three cubic meters of soil. If we could not finish these tasks in time, they would force us to work during the night to complete them. In late 1977, they sent me to dig canals and build the 30 September dam. They ordered people to carry three and a half cubic meters of soil per day. If a person could not finish this task, they would make us work until twelve a.m. Aside from family separation, I did not know of Angkar’s plan. |
