The Russians had recently been scoring some big gains. A military coup in Afghanistan unseated nationalist regime. Because Afghanistan was a remote country, bordering on Russia, Russia was able to recognize the new regime before the American does. Soviet movites in Afghanistan found an equivalent situation in Southeast Asia. The Vietnamese, who were linked with Moscow, seem to be working up a struggle with the Cambodians, who had tie with Peking.
រុស្សីនាពេលថ្មីៗនេះបានទទួលផលដល់ធំ។ រដ្ឋប្រហារយោធាមួយនៅ អាហ្វហ្គានីស្ថាន បានជម្រុំចោលរបបជាតិនិយម។ ដោយសារអាហ្វហ្គានីស្ថានជាប្រទេសដែលនៅឆ្ងាយ (ពីអាមេរិក) ហើយមានព្រំប្រទល់ជាប់ រុស្សី រុស្សីបានធ្វើការទទួលស្គាល់របបថ្មីនេះមុនអាមេរិក។ បំណងរបស់សូវៀតនៅ អាហ្វហ្គានីស្ថាន គឺមានសភាពដូចនឹងនៅអាស៊ីអាគេ្នយ៍។ ជនជាតិវៀតណាម ដែលមានទំនាក់ទំនងជាមួយ ម៉ូស្គូ មើលទៅហាក់ដូចជាកំពុងធ្វើកាតទល់ជាមួយនឹងកម"ុជា ដែលមានកាទាក់ទងជាមួយប៉េកាំង។
