Forced labor
One evening in 1978, Chork, the commune chief, called me to attend a meeting and told my group, consisting of twelve members, to carry soil at the 6 January dam. At the time, Prenh, a unit chief, supervised our work. I worked from four a.m. to eleven a.m. and from one p.m. to six p.m. If we could not finish the assigned task, they would make us continue working. In terms of rations, they gave us only gruel: one bowl for each person. During this time, I never had enough food to eat. My knees were bigger than my head. They cut my rations off twice when I had a swelling disease and was unable to go to work. Chork was the person who cut my rations off. He said that I was taking advantage of other people’s labor. Even though I was sick, they still forced me to work. If I did not work, my rations would be decreased. During my illness, I was not sent to the hospital, but forced to work as normal. |

Killing
In 1977, I loaded people onto a cart and drove them to Sra-nge pagoda, located in Sra-nge village, Theng commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province. Chet, a combatant chief, told me that these three people were the enemy. Carrying out his orders, I took these three people to Sra-nge pagoda. Chet was a combatant chief in Tbil village, Sankor commune, Kampong Svay district. At the time, Chet arrested and sent people to Sra-nge pagoda, a detention center. The majority of people sent there by Chet never returned. Most people arrested were accused of being enemies and part of a Yuon network. Chork, a commune chief who arrested and exterminated many families, always said that people were being taken to grow potatoes. I do not know why Chork arrested and killed people. In 1977, Chet accused Ne’s family, consisting of seven members, and Poeu’s family, consisting of three members, of being capitalists who used to work in Phnom Penh. Then Chet killed them. They said that capitalists oppressed workers. During a meeting, Chork stated that [we] killed the intellectuals and capitalists because they oppressed the labor of the workers. After this meeting, Chork sent Ne and Poeu’s families to Sra-nge pagoda. Later on, there was no sign of them. Family separation In 1976, Chork, the commune chief, arranged a marriage for me. After the wedding, I was only allowed to spend ten nights with my wife. Then I was put to work in a mobile work brigade in Trapeang Bay Vak, located in Tbil village, Sankor commune, Kampong Svay district. Assigning me to build canals, they ordered me to dig three cubic meters of earth. My wife was sent to work in a cooperative dining hall in Tbil village, Sankor commune, Kampong Svay district. At this time, after finishing my work, I was permitted to go meet my wife. |
