The outright suceess of Vietnam's invasion of Cambodia in December 1978 surprised many obsevers including the Vietnamese. Behind a Cambodian front, the Vietnamese people's Army swept aside the government of Democratic Kampuchea, displaycing thousands of people to the Thai-Cambodian border.
ការលុកលុយរបស់វៀតណាមនៅកម្ពុជាទទួលជោគជ័យទាំងស្រុងនៅខែធ្នូ ១៩៧៨, មានការភ្ញាក់ផ្អើលជាមួយអ្នកសងេ្កតការណ៍ជាច្រើន បូករួមទាំង ជនជាតិវៀតណាម។ នៅពីក្រោយមុខកម្ពុជា កងទ័ពប្រជាជនវៀតណាម បាន លិចលង់ក្នុងរដ្ឋាភិបាលនៃកម្ពុជាប្រជាធិបតេយ្យ ប្រជាជនរាប់ពាន់ នាក់ផ្លាស់កន្លែងទៅព្រំដែនខ្មែរ-ថៃ។
