Malnutrition:
Generally, under the Khmer Rouge regime, meals were inadequate. However, in my experience, conditions were most extreme in 1977. At that time, I lived in Kbel Village, Sankor Commune, Kampong Svay District, Kampong Thom Province. I was given gruel mixed with fish paste and morning glory. There were two meals per day; half a ladle of gruel was given each time. This nutrition was insufficient. I do not remember the name of the cooperative chief. At that time, rice production was abundant, but I never understood why we were not given sufficient food to sustain ourselves. My cousin, En, plowed the fields and also received insufficient food rations. |

Execution:
In approximately April of 1977, I saw a person being taken to be executed. The person taken to be killed was a woman whose name I do not recall. Chet, the security chief, took and killed the woman, accusing her of being Vietnamese. However, based on my judgment, she was Khmer. At that time, upon going to pick up branches of the La Peak tree [a kind of tree used to weave buckets] to make an earth-moving bucket, I saw them kill the woman with a hoe in the forest of Kbel Village. Aun, my friend, also witnessed the incident. In approximately late 1977, I saw four or five prisoners being shackled at the security prison of Kbel Village. When I passed by the prison as I was searching for La Peak vine, I saw the prisoners being shackled. Chet was the prison chief. I was alone when I witnessed the prisoners, none of whom I recognized. I do not know why those people were arrested. |
