When Phnom Penh fell, many Cambodians including him were happy, believing that peace would now return. On the same day as the communists took power, the order to evacuate the city was given by Khmer Rouge forces. At last he managed to escape to Thailand after 2 and a half year suffering in Cambodia.
នៅពេលទីក្រុងភំ្នពេញដួលរំលំ មានប្រជាជនកម្ពុជាជាច្រើន រួមទាំង យ៉ាថាយ មានសេចក្ដីរីករាយជាខ្លាំង ជឿថាសន្ដិភាពបានវិលត្រលប់មកលើយពេលនេះ។ ក្នុងថ្ងៃតែមួយពួកកុម្មនិស្ដបានឡើងកាន់អំណាច និង បព្ជាឱ្យធ្វើការជម្លៀសចេញពីទីក្រុងដោយទាហានខ្មែរក្រហម។ ២ឆ្នាំកន្លះ យ៉ាថាយ បានរងទុក្ខវេទនាក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជា មុនពេល យ៉ាថាយ រៀបចំរត់ភៀសខ្លួនទៅប្រទេសថៃ។
