In the rainy season of 1978, I was an eyewitness to the arrest of my younger sister and her family by Than, the security police chief, who was accompanied by Chan and four other security policemen whose names I do not know. They arrested my younger sister, Seng Yi, 23, her husband, Sok Kraen, 29, and their two children, my nieces, ages two and one. They were taken to be executed at one a.m. on the accusation of being traitorous white Khmer. When the incident took place, I was sleeping at a construction site at Morha Pagoda, located in Morha Village, Chey Commune, Kampong Svay District. I saw security police approaching to arrest them and escort them inside the pagoda next to the pond. They killed them to the north of the temple in the pagoda, approximately a hundred meters from where I lived.
First they captured my younger sister and her husband, tying their hands behind their backs, blindfolding them, gagging them by putting clothes in their mouths, and killing them. Then the security police beat my sister’s husband on the neck and skull. After that, they beat my young nieces. Because the two girls cried out loud, the security police threw them into the pond, drowning them to death. Later six security police buried their bodies in the bottom of the pond and walked back to the Morha office. After witnessing such an incident, I tried to compose myself when the security police returned. I suspected that those six security police spied on me for almost half a month, questioning me by saying “How could you work and not be affected by the loss of relatives, after watching them die?� I knew they were testing me and so I replied, “No! They betrayed the party. I am not grieving, because they were traitors.� However, deep inside my mind, I could barely tolerate the situation; I was extremely depressed and was coughing up blood because of overwork and the stress of witnessing such a tragic incident which happened to my family members. I just tried to hide and acted as if I did not know or hear anything in order to keep the incident a secret. Based on my knowledge, Chan, the communal security chief, ordered the six security police to kill my younger sister and her family. I was working at the construction site of the communal office and witnessed the incident. Later, Chan, the communal security chief, wanted to kill me after I finished building one hundred collective houses. Fortunately, the Vietnamese troops came to liberate us after I had finished building forty-nine houses. Chan, the communal security chief, had wanted to kill me, accusing me of being part of the traitorous White Khmer network, led by Hou Nim and Hou Yun.
