In April 1967, Thirith was spotted at Samlaut, at around the beginning of the outbreak of fighting (BK, HPP, p. 250 ) ~ As "early as 1971-1972 Ieng Sary and his wife Ieng Thirith had established their political authority over the Khmers" living in Hanoi. Thirith, for instance, "was in charge of the radio" (BK, HPP, p. 359) ~ In 1972, Thirith ordered Pen Sovan, a CPK resident in Hanoi, to compile a list of those Khmer communists who had spent the Sihanouk years in Hanoi (BK, HPP, p. 359) ~ hosted Vietnamese delegation's visit to Cambodia in February 1977, representing the Women's Association of Democratic Kampuchea." The visit was a tense one. Part of the visit included a three-day round trip to Angkor (BK, PPR, p. 160) ~ sent to the Northwest Zone by Pol Pot in 1976 to investigate health, diet, and housing of workers (reported to be inadequate)(EB, WWO, p. 247)
