at the age of 6, "Sar was sent to Phnom Penh and for one year was a novice at Botum Vodey monastery," the religious center of the small, royalist Thommayut order. When he was 8, "he began schooling at the Ecole Miche, a private Catholic school, and spent the next six years there." At 14, apparently because of a failed entrance examination to a Phnom Penh school, Sar was sent to the city of Kampong Cham for his intermediate education, spending six years at the Norodom Sihanouk High School. After returning to Phnom Penh in 1948, to study carpentry at the Russey Keo Technical School, Sar received a scholarship to take a two-year technicians' course at the Ecole Francaise de radioelectricite in Paris. He failed in his third year of study, and returned to Cambodia, arriving in Phnom Penh on 14 January 1953 (BK, HPP, pp. 27, 29, 122) ~ educated in Paris, France, 194909- (BK, PPR, p. 10)

studied in France: with other Khmer students living in Paris, Sary in 1950 formed a "Marxist Circle," "apparently affiliated with the French Communist Party (PCF)as its "Khmer-language section."
