In late 1975, former Lon Nol soldiers, including my family and around fifty other villagers who lived in the village and commune, were evacuated to the provincial town. My husband and I were evacuated to Chaeng Santuk by Khmer Rouge soldiers. Because my husband was a Lon Nol soldier who carried rice for the Lon Nol soldiers at Svay Tran, he was arrested and killed by the Khmer Rouge security guards. One day at around nine p.m. , two militiamen whose names I do not recall, ordered him to do farming. (I do not know where he went to do the farming.) I was with him at the time. My husband left with the two militiamen, as they walked together into the night.
The next morning, full of doubt, I asked villagers and neighbors for news of my husband. They said that my husband was fine and had enough food to eat. They tried to comfort me because I had two little daughters: one was two years old and the other was only two months old. A month later, I learned that my husband was executed by the Khmer Rouge soldiers (unknown names) on the accusation of being a former Lon Nol soldier. During that time, approximately fifty people disappeared. I am certain that my husband and other people who lived in Santuk District were killed by the Khmer Rouge soldiers. However, I do not know how they were killed or who the executioners were. A year later, in late 1976, my first daughter died from malnutrition because Sok, the cooperative chief in Sa-rieng Village, Trapeang Khlang Commune, Taing Kok District, Kampong Thom Province, forced me to work transplanting rice seedlings, building a dam, digging the earth, and farming, and as a result, I did not have time to look after my two-year-old daughter. At first, my daughter became sick, crying most of the time, and feeling dizzy. Then she became unable to speak, had a high fever, and died. I buried her in Taing Kok District. I think that the cooperative chief caused my daughter’s death because he did not give her enough food to eat and he put me to work long hours, sometimes until the nighttime. I was furious because there was no one looking after my daughter. |
