From 1975 to 1979, the mosque in Banteay Prey was closed and no Chams were allowed to worship. The Khmer Rouge used the mosque as a warehouse to store salt. I learned of this incident from my mother, Nhoa (currently living in this village). She did not inform me who ordered the Khmer Rouge leaders to close down the mosque. Moreover, she did not know who was the village chief, the unit chief, or the security police chief during the regime. Religion was eliminated. My mother informed me that the Khmer Rouge prohibited our people from worshiping. Those found worshiping were taken for re-education. Those taken for re-education never returned. They did not allow us to hold traditional wedding ceremonies. The Khmer Rouge just called up couples to grasp each other’s hands and pronounced them married immediately. She stated that Angkar implemented the principle of closing down the mosques and prohibiting people from worshiping. I do not know who Angkar is. Mode of participation: As a Khmer Rouge victim, I want to file the application form to be a complainant, because: 1. I am busy with my public work (commune council member). 2. I have to teach on the weekend. 3. I am busy with religious tasks. I think that I have participated in the process of finding justice. |
