We endured terrible living conditions, with no education, in O Rasap Village. My younger sister’s in-law, Phann Ly, was executed on the accusation of acting freely and not doing the assigned tasks. The incident took place in 1976 at Khmoch Mountain (adjacent to Kaun Mom district hall.) The local authority and cooperative cadres arrested my younger sister’s in-law. We learned of this incident because we passed O Torting construction site (Lum Phat District). The people at that site were base people of different nationalities, and included the young and the old. People were not categorized, but the ethnic minorities (Kroeng, Pro, Tum Puon, Charay) were assigned to do the farming. A production unit was part of the cooperative. There were lots of Kroeng in Region 5. In Kaun Mom cooperative, there was no freedom at all. We lived according to the rules set by Angkar. The house was small, and it could not exceed three meters by four meters, because that was the size limit set by Angkar. No ethnic groups were allowed to follow their traditions, because that was the Khmer Rouge policy. We had to wear black shirts and trousers; white cloth or other colors needed to be blackened. Our music and traditions were eliminated, because only Khmer Rouge art was allowed. Buddha statues in Esan Ratanaream Pagoda were destroyed and used to build Vin Sai Road. The people who transported the statues are dead. I learned of this incident from a youth who worked with me. Khmoch Mountain in Kaun Mom District was a killing place, because my cousin was executed there. A number of Khmer Rouge was killed by people after 1979, because they implemented a strict policy to evacuate people to the pagoda. Sao Nguon, a kind former Khmer Rouge cadre, now lives in O Thlong Village, Trapeang Chres Commune, Kaun Mom District. |
