My lost property included cattle, a house, a jar, and elephants. Our traditions, consisting of praying and dedicating foods to Arak [ghost spirit], Nak Ta [guarding spirit], as well as other ethnic traditions, were eliminated. Following orders from the regional level, the leaders prohibited us from following our traditions. The upper level Angkar collected our property. If we did not give it to them, they would kill us.
In 1977, my cousin, Traing Kravatt, was taken to be executed on the accusation that he was a soldier in Region 102. Separated from his wife, Moeung pretended to be crazy and was arrested as a result. After the group chief found out that he was malingering, he was captured. Khatt was the region chief and an elderly man named Lumphay Phong was the deputy chief. |
