Summary / Abstract :
|
Pol Pot is the name indelibly associated with the Khmer Rouge genocide of 1975-1979. Although officially removed from formal positions of power, he remains at the head of the Khmer Rouge in 1995, so h is story is not merely of historical interest. David Chandler, one of the most established historians of Cambodia, turns his hand at a new genre in this biographical portrait, based largely on seconda ry sources and with no personal interview with the subject himself. Originally named Saloth Sar, Pol Pot has lived in secrecy hidden behind numerous aliases of which Pol Pot is the best known, and Bro ther Number One was for some time used internally within the KR. This is an eminently readable volume in which Chandler evocatively recreates the atmosphere of the various chapters in Pol Pot's life, seeking the explanation for his genocidal acts in psychological and personality rather than political terms.
