The arrest and death of my father
At dawn in April of 1978, a regional security chief, Phun (deceased), and a handful of Khmer Rouge soldiers came to arrested my father, Men Samoeun, at his crop farm next to the Svay Chrum pagoda, just as he was about to go to work. My sister, Men Saman, and I witnessed the incident, because we were going to work with him. At that time, Sarin, Saing, Chhun, and my father were tied up and put onto a truck, with the accusation that they were traitors, that is to say, people with leanings towards the Vietnamese. Despite witnessing the incident, we did not dare ask them, where they were taking our father, because we were afraid they would arrest too. At the time, I was not sure whether my father was a traitor or not. But he always followed orders. After they arrested my father, they not only started to keep an eye on my family, they but also decreased our food rations. Later, Kim informed me, that my father was imprisoned at Chrabach mountain, located in region 20. That was the only news we received about him. We do not know what happened to him after that. We do not know, whether he was executed, or how much brutal tortured he received before he died. He disappeared from the moment he was arrested. We all believe, he must have been killed. If not, he would have returned to us. |
