Summary / Abstract :
Nouth Choeum, the press secretary of Prince Sihanouk, gave an interview to the Far Eastern Economic Review that Sihanouk was betrayed by the Khmer Rouge after the latter siezed power in Phnom Penh. Th e Khmer Rouge deliberately ignored the prince. Later, on July 18, 1975, the Khmer Rouge invited Sihanouk to return to Cambodia. But only after Sihanouk visited the Chinese Prime Minister, Chou En Lai, in early September that he decided to accept the invitation. He told Nouth Choeum that his decision to return home did not mean that he agreed with the brutal policy of the Khmer Rouge. But he had to pay gratitude to China and Chou En Lai. After he arrived in Cambodia, his movement was limited within the old palace and Phnom Penh. He found that most his supporters were either evacuated to the cou ntryside or disappeared. He used to preside over the Khmer Rouge meeting but was not allowed to ask any question. He was forced to sign all papers handed to him without the opportunity to consider the m. Nouth Choeum said that the Khmer Rouge was divided between pro-Beijing and pro-Soviet/Vietnam. The latter now became more powerful in the party.
