On April 29, 1978, Khmer Rouge soldiers fired shells across the border into Aranyaprathet market. The Acting District head of Aranyaprathet, Siriwat Phadungkun, said the Khmer Rogue did not have any r eason in attacking Thailand. They just shot when they felt like it. Aranyaprathet market was very quiet, only the police and soldiers were seen around on the streets. Bunkers were built up in several spots. One of them was able to shelter 500 people. The Thai authorities also set up sound alarms all over the market area. People in the Thai border villages temporarily abandoned their houses for a s afer place.
