Summary / Abstract :
This novel, which takes the form of a diary, tells the story of a woman (Sameth)of European-Chinese-Khmer ancestry who is caught up in and witnesses the cataclysmic events that have torn asunder Cambo dia (Kampuchea)since the 1970s. It chronicles the woman's life -- her decision whether to remain in the country or to escape -- as well as the slaughter of up to 3 million out of 7 million Cambodians by the Pol Pot regime from 1975 to 1979, the Vietnamese invasion of the country, the guerrilla warfare that has continued ever since, and the plight of the refugees along the Thailand-Cambodian border s. The novel has been praised for powerfully delineating "the cynical international politics of our era," but criticized for the weaknesses of its portrayal of the protagonist, who seems more Western than Eastern in her actions and thoughts. (Samuel Totten).
