Summary / Abstract :
On July 20, 1977, a 40-man combined unit of Border Patrol Police and soldiers were attacked and surrounded by the Cambodian forces. The battle continued for three hours. The clash killed 17 Thai offic ers and wounded seven others. Three Thai journalists accompanying the unit were also wounded. On July 21, Thai Supreme Commander Air Chief Marshal Kamol Tejatungka said he had sent an armed force to c lear the area. On July 22, Thai Foreign Minister Upadit Pachariyangkun said Cambodia refused to acknowledge the border line agreed upon during the French colonial period. He noted that since the Oct 6 , 1976 incident in Thailand, Cambodia became apparently hostile towards Thailand. Thai Interior Minister Samak Sundaravej said the Khmer Rouge attack was an act in an underhanded manner. Cambodia was not so populated that Thailand could go and crush it anytime.
