The loss of my brother, Lok Sie
In approximately July of 1978, I lived at a regional solider base. I did not know its location at the time, since it was moved from place to place. During his time, my younger brother, Lok Sie, became ill and was taken to be hospitalized at Svay Chrum district. At the time, the hospital at Svay Chrum district was a military hospital. During the regime, my wife, Ken Koeun, my daughter, Ken Saral, and I lived in Angkabas village, Svay Chrum commune, Svay Chrum district, Svay Rieng province. At the time, an unknown person came to inform my mother that my brother was wounded and had been sent to the hospital at Svay Chrum district. My mother then told me the news. My mother went to visit him before I did. Upon my arrival at the hospital, I found out that he had been wounded by a bullet in his leg. When I asked him, he told me that the wound on his leg was not severe. Later on, when I went to visit him a second time, I did not see him there. I asked a medic about my brother, who told me that my brother had been sent to a hospital at Nak Loeung, because the medical treatment here could was not sufficient to help him recover. I did not go to visit my brother at the hospital in Nak Loeung, because it was very long way from Svay Chrum to Nak Loeung, and because the journey was not easy. Then, my brother disappeared forever. I think he must have been killed by cadres during the purge of the eastern zone, because at the hospital at Svay Chrum district, we saw that his wound was not serious at all. I do not know who killed him. However, I believe the upper level [of the regime] ordered the southwest cadres to wipe out the eastern cadres. After the fall of the Pol Pot regime, I do not believe that my brother could have survived, because he was an eastern Khmer Rouge soldier. At that time, Soa Phim was accused of being a traitor, with leanings towards the Vietnamese. All eastern soldiers were executed. In short, I do not know for sure who killed my brother. But I believe that the southwest cadres killed him. I do not have a witness. |
