Summary / Abstract :
កំណត់សម្គាល់សេចក្ដីសង្ខេប :
In an earlier issue of the Internet on the Holocaust and Genocide, Foss requested readers to send him information about courses they were teaching on the Holocaust and/or genocide. This is a prelimina ry report of his findings. As for courses on genocide, "seven courses were reported taught at 8 universities in 4 countries (USA, Israel, Canada, and Australia)and in 5 departments (Government, Histor y, Interdisciplinary Studies, Social Work, and Sociology). All but one were one semester, and all butone were at an undergraduate level. The titles reveal an interesting variety of approaches: Aggress ion and Violence; Coping with Stress of War and Peace (about survivors); Genocide (largely 20th century); History and Sociology of Genocide; Human Destructiveness and Politics; and Politics of Genocid e. Most courses offered broad surveys, with special attention to the Holocaust, the Armenians, Cambodia, American Indians; definitions of genocide; genocide in contemporary history; and prediction and prevention of genocide." As for the Holocaust, there were responses from twenty institutions in three countries (USA, Israel, and England), and they represented seven departments (history, literature and language, philosophy, psychiatry (medical school), psychology, religion, and social work. The great majority of the courses were offered at the undergraduate level, four were for graduates, and o ne was open. Foss is continuing to solicit and analyze such data. (Samuel Totten).
