A detailed description of why Cambodia fell prey to internal conflict and external war -- how Cambodia was a sideshow in which the principal antogonists were engaging in power politics fo larger stake s, while not reluctant to sacrifice Cambodians to further their own aims. Based on more than 100 confidential interviews with diplomats and others, the book traces how the narcissistic foreign policie s of fifteen countries failed to come to terms with the realities of Cambodia, making the pursuit of peace impossible until statesmen from Australia and France made significant break-throughs to bring the waring parties together. The book concludes with a section on lessons from the study, including a plea to abandon power politics for the pursuit of a world pluralism that would maximize chances f or peace while ending the role of pawns in superpower politics.
