Reality therapy proved a highly successful counseling technique for use with Khmer refugees resettled in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Khmer refugees tend to feel worse when discussing past events. Reality Therapy is effective since it focuses onthe present rather than the past, and the approach is consistent with traditional Cambodian coping style. Follow-up studies of posttraumatic stress diso rders among survivors of Cambodian concentration camps found that detailed inquiry often intensified symptoms. A case history is presented of a 15-year-old Cambodian girl with a young baby, causing su ch shame to the parents that they deserted her and moved to California. Reality therapy produced positive results in this case. Khmer refugees who have resettled in the US need to receive mental healt h services appropriate to their unique needs. (IHG Staff).
