Phnom Penh before Lon Nol's 1970 Pro-American coup against Sihanouk, Phnom Penh had between 500000 and 600000 inhabitants. During the war people poured into the cities as a result of social presures and the American bombing in 1973, the population of Phnom Penh had reached about two million in the opinion of most foreigners.
