Marshal Lon Nol has always been a recluse. But last week, as rumors swept Phnom Penh that he had flown secretly into exile, the partially paralyzed (from a 1971 stroke), 61-year-old leader emerged from the shadows of his modest villa on the grounds of Chamka Mon palace. On one occasion he invited foreign newsmen into his garden, where he showed off his family, hobbled about with aid of a cane and politely refused to answer questions. A few days later, Lon Nol appeared in the presidential palace, this time to preside over a simple ceremony transferring command of the Cambodia Army from Gen Sosthene Fernandez to Lt Gen Sak Sutsakhan.
