Over 600 people trapped in the French Embassy in Phnom Penh since the Khmer Rouge take over today begin a trek to Thailand by road despite French fears that some lives could be at risk. France insists that the 610 people, most of them French but also including Russians, East Germans, Indians, Pakistanis and Britons should be flown out of the Cambodian capital and has had an aircraft standing by in Vientiane, Laos, for over a week.
