They came to Cambodia a little over a century ago spear heading a missing civilisatrice to bring the French language, culture and life-style to a people not blessed with those benefits at birth. During decades of French rule, Phnom Penh, with it broad, tree-line boulevards and pleasant side walk cafés, became the most Parisian city in southeast Asia. Even when Cambodia finally gained its independence in 1954, many French businessman, technicians and school teachers stayed on.
