Almost exactly eight years ago Khieu Samphan a left-wing economics professor and a member of Sihanouk's parliament, told his mother he was going out for a breath of fresh air before dinner, walked from the house, and disappeared. He has not been seen since in Phnom Penh but no doubt he soon will be-as commnder-in-chief of the Khmer Rouge Army and effective leader of the Cambodian communist movement. Samphan's disappearance brought only limited comment at the time. But in retrospect it appears as the definitive parting of the ways between left-wing and right-wing in Cambodia.
