If the Republic electural platform and Nixon's acceptance speach of August 23 needed clarification, these were abundantly spoilled by the US president's and Melvin Lard's statements separetely only by one day. On August 28, laird annonced thar US military activities in Vietnam would continue until the adversary accepted to revert to the 1968 tacit understanding or the Geneva agreements or a negotiated sattlement had been amired at. By tacit understanding and Geneva Agreements as construced by the Republic Administration, the Defence Secretary apparently meant that the PLAF should regroup north of the 17th paralled while the USAF would be free reconnoitre at discretion North Vieetnam's airspace.
