In the early 1960's I made several visit to Cambodia, usually from Saigon, and was struck by the increasing contrast between the impact of expanding war in South Vietnam and the tranquility of Phnom Penh, the capital city. Situated at the junction of the Mekong River and the outlet of the Tonle Sap, the Great Lake, Phnom Penh was distinguished by its broad, tree-lined boulevards, glittering tile-roofed royal place compound, and the lieurely pace of its life.
