The American finally gave up in the besieged Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh yesterday-almost five years to the day since Ex-president Nixon ordered United States forces in to destroy communist forces using the country as a base for the war in neighbouring Vietnam. As communist insurgents closed in, 36 US Marine helicopters flew in under a hail of rocket and rifle fire and evacuated the US Ambassador, Mr. John Gunther Deam, his staff, 38 foreigners and 159 Cambodians whose lives appeared threatened by the insurgents.
