Prince 1945, when he took to the jungle to fight French colomialism, Pattet Laos leader Prince Souvanouvong, now 62, has been and enigmatic fiture. Son of one of the three reigning families of Laos and one of the country's three engineers as the sun was setting on French rule, Souphanouvong had all the characteristics of an elitist leader. Yet the chose to join Ho Chi Minh against the French and later against American intervention, Spending more than 25 years in prison and in the Jungles and caves of Sam Neua, punctuated by stints in coalition governments in Vientiane.
