Phnom Penh: It was in 1969 that former Cambodian head-of-state Prince Norodom Sihanouk was forced to cut short a visit to the northeast part of his kingdom due to the control exerted by the north Vietnam in the region. He returned to Phnom Penh in a rage, denounced the Vietnamese communist and ordered the than General Lon Nol to clear the country of intruders.
