Phnom Penh: The March 17 events that culminated in Marshal Lon Nol's declaration of state of seige were notable for their confusing, intriguing, and disastrous consequences. Although overshadowed by the more dramatic bombing of the presidential palace compound, the tragedy surrouding a morning student-teacher demonstration shed more light on the reason behind the government's measures to suspend most civil liberties.
