Your review of the four days of Mayaguez [Review, Jan. 30] points out as one of the salient features of the book "the fact that the Mayaguez was in the habit of sailing the seas without a flag (allegedly because the high winds of the South China sea tear a flag tatters)." Merchant ships virtaully never fly their flags while on the high seas for both the perfectly valid "alleged" reason and because in open water it is rare for another vessel to approach close enough to identify a flag with certainty.
