There is something about Indochina with infects the Americans with a death-wish. Washington has had ample opportunity to open negotiations with Prince Sihanouk, but Dr Kissinger has always refused. His excuse, apart from a basic unwillingness to deal with-and thus to recognise-the prince, appears to be the Micawberish belief that «something will turn up» waiting in the vain hope that the resolve of the Khmer Rouge will weaken or that president Lon Nol's position will improve.
