A Cambodian officer sat on an empty ammunition box chatting to his colleagues, around him misty shapes of men bound for the front line melted into the evening darkness that cloaked the paddy fields. When a mortar bomb burst 80 years way, lieutenant Chau Soeung did not jumb. There is an uncanny reluctance among Cambodian soldiers to react rapidly to danger.
